To achieve a colourful garden through the year, choose flowering shrubs that bloom in each of the seasons. In this article we cover our choices for Autumn blooms.

Hibiscus sinensis (above) - The large flowers of this shrub have an almost exotic appearance with large petals around a central stigma. This deciduous shrub is in fact hardy, but can be shy to flower, so plant in full sun in well drained soil and feed regularly with a high potash fertiliser.

Abelia x gandiflora - A very pretty shrub with fine evergreen foliage. In late summer, dark pink flower buds open to reveal pale pink trumpet-shaped flowers that are lightly scented. Buds continue to open well into autumn. Prefers a warm spot, sheltered from cold winds.

Ceratostigma willmotianum - Known as the hardy plumbago, this low-growing shrub produces clusters of pointed buds that open to reveal pure blue flowers over a long period. The diamond-shaped leaves held on wiry stems take on red tints before they fall.

 Other shrubs to consider:
  • Fuchsia
  • Camellia sasaqua varieties
  • Ceanothus
  • 'Autumnal Blue'
