Hi again folks, I've been given a small sarcococcus plant which is currently in the greenhouse in a 4" pot.
Can anyone please tell me anything more about this plant? Where should it be planted and how do I care for it?

Thanks.

Hi
Sarcococca.....which one is it?
ruscifolia...small growing about 60x80 cm. Full sun part shade - shade. Light. Well drained soil on the acid side.
hookeriana...about 150x 200 cm
confusa....about 2.5 x 1.5 mtrs. All have a very strong scent.

Hello Richard

Sarcococca is the Christmas box, so it's a great evergreen shrub for winter with a fantastic fragrance from the small, white, winter flowers.

Your plant is tiny at the moment, so you could either keep it outside in its pot until next spring, or plant it where you want it to grow in autumn. It is also a slow-growing plant, another reason to wait a while until it is bigger before planting it.

Check the roots. If the roots don't really fill the pot, keep it where it is and keep watering it through the summer.

As Bazza says, it depends which one you've got as to how tall and wide it will grow. Check the type you've got then allocate it enough space to grow about 6ft tall and possibly about 6ft wide.

The good news is, it is generally robust and will put up with dry shade, pollution and neglect. You can plant it in the shade. Give it a moist but well-drained and fertile soil for best results.

I would choose a final spot in the garden for it where you will appreciate some winter interest.

I have a Sarcococcus in a pot which I keep by the front door in winter to appreciate the gorgeous fragrance every time I leave the house, but as this gets a lot of sun I move the pot to a shadier spot in the summer when it is just a green shrub. If it gets too much sun the lovely dark green glossy leaves will become very much more anaemic.
