Hi June

I think it is a bit more challenging. I have many (red and green acers) in my woodland garden (not near coast, in Surrey) and find them easy to look after - the only time one of my red ones gt scorched was when a conifer behind it was removed thus letting in more light - it did recover.

Many years ago I gave a red-leaved one to my friend who lived in Brighton, she put it in a pot in a courtyard and it did look very sad. I think it did recover but can't quite remember - perhaps a combination of sun and salt. A bit of shade netting might help if you can't relocate it.

Hi Liz, thanks for reply, I have lost three, I lived in town originally and the one i had did really well, I moved to coast, looked like it was dying, gave it to a friend in country side, saw it last week, it was looking great, my last one I have actually put in soil in garden, with plenty of compost and fertiliser. still not looking too good. maybe I should give up. I have another question for you, this year i have tried potatoes in a bin, doing great, so far, but went to water them this moringing and something is eating the leaves. I sprayed them with Sybol a general insecticide, will this affect the potoes?
